Sewer Line Repair in Las Vegas: Spot Repair or Full Replacement?
By American Brothers Plumbing · 2026-10-02 · 5 min read
Whether a sewer line needs a spot repair or a full replacement comes down to one question: is the damage in one place, or along the length of the pipe? A single cracked joint, a root intrusion at one spot or one collapsed section can be dug up and replaced on its own. A line that is cracked, sagging or root-filled in several places usually costs less in the long run to replace than to keep patching.
You cannot answer that question from the yard. The camera answers it.
Signs the Problem Is the Sewer Line, Not One Drain
A single slow sink is a drain problem. A sewer line problem shows up across the house:
- more than one fixture backing up or draining slowly at the same time
- water coming up in the tub or shower when the toilet is flushed or the washer drains
- gurgling from drains that are not in use
- a sewage smell in the yard or near the cleanout
- a patch of grass or landscaping that stays greener or wetter than the rest, along the path of the line
If sewage is backing up into the house, stop running water, including the dishwasher and washing machine, until the line has been checked. Every gallon that goes down has nowhere to go but back up.
Why Las Vegas Sewer Lines Fail
The lateral from your house to the sewer main in the street is private, usually all the way to the main, including the part under the sidewalk. Our post on who is responsible for the sewer line in Las Vegas covers that in detail. The common failures on that run are:
- Root intrusion. Roots find the moisture at pipe joints and grow in. Valley landscaping, especially mature trees and heavily watered shrubs near the line, is the usual source.
- Bellies. A section of pipe settles and sags, so waste collects in the low spot instead of flowing through. Clogs keep coming back at the same point.
- Cracks and breaks. Older clay and cast-iron lines crack under soil load and shifting ground. Cast iron also corrodes from the inside over decades.
- Offset joints. Two sections separate or shift out of line, leaving a ledge that catches waste and lets roots in.

The Camera Inspection Comes First
We do not quote a sewer repair without looking inside the pipe. A sewer camera inspection runs a waterproof camera through the line from a cleanout and records what it finds, along with how far along the line each problem sits and roughly how deep. That tells us:
- what the damage is: roots, a belly, a crack, a collapse or an offset joint
- where it is, so any digging is in the right place
- whether it is one spot or several
- what the rest of the line looks like, which decides whether a spot repair will last
If the line is blocked, it may need clearing first so the camera can get through. Drain cleaning restores flow, but it only buys time when the pipe itself is damaged. Roots cut out of a cracked joint grow back. Our guide to what a sewer camera inspection shows has more on reading the footage.
When a Spot Repair Makes Sense
A spot repair means excavating only the damaged section, cutting it out and replacing it with new PVC pipe connected to the sound pipe on either side. It is usually the right call when:
- the camera shows one problem area, or two close together
- the rest of the line is in reasonable condition, with no widespread cracking, corrosion or sagging
- the damage is somewhere that can be reached without disturbing a driveway or structure more than necessary
It is less digging, less disruption to the yard and a lower bill. The catch is that it only fixes the section you replace. If the pipe on either side is near the end of its life, the next failure is already on its way.

When Full Replacement Is the Better Call
Full replacement means replacing the run from the house to the connection with new, properly graded pipe. It usually makes more sense when:
- the camera finds damage at several points along the line
- the pipe is old clay or cast iron that is cracking or corroding along its length
- there is a long belly, or the line was never graded correctly in the first place
- you have already paid for one or two spot repairs on the same line
Paying for three separate excavations on a failing line usually costs more than replacing it once. A new line also comes with correct grading, which fixes the recurring clogs a belly causes.
What the Job Involves
Either way, the job starts with the camera findings and a free, upfront estimate, so you know the scope and the price before anything is dug. Sewer work in the valley requires permits, and we handle them. Depending on how much excavation is needed, a sewer repair takes anywhere from one to three days. The finished line is graded so waste flows properly, and the trench is backfilled when the work is done.
